When Dan was looking for a stallion that would attracted a lot of mares, he came to the decision that he would put together a syndicate and buy a very special horse from the USA, something that an individual probably could not afford. He started looking in 2005, making many contacts in the United States. He finally had several to look at so went over during the Super Stakes in April 2007. He looked at horses all over Texas and Oklahoma. Not finding what he wanted he was ready to return home empty handed. He went to a show at Graham Texas with Dan Popeck where he saw exactly what he was looking for. A three year old Peptoboonsmal stud colt that Bobby Lewis had in training for the Snaffle Bit Cowhorse Futurity and that was Peppy Boontown. Bobby was riding him around the loping pen just giving the young horse an outing. Dan just loved the way the horse moved, he just glided around. He said he was so taken by how smooth this horse looked and the stop on him was earth shattering. Dan approached Bobby and enquired about him. Bobby got back to Dan with a price a few weeks after he returned to Australia. Dan recalls “I was judging the Paradise Lagoons Stockmans Challenge when I got the call. During a break I called them back, got the price and went looking for more investors.” Dan Baker arranged for Dan Popeck to try the horse on a cow and if he liked him he would have his vet x-ray him and do all the relevant tests. “Dan Popeck rang me at about 3am in the morning all excited; he said “he is what we have been looking for.” So they bought him.
Whilst in the USA he showed in the USA NCHA Futurity and some other aged events. He placed 5th out of 65 horses scoring a 74 at Graham Texas, as well as a couple of 6ths and a 7th.
The syndicate froze some semen while Peppy Boontown was in the USA and shipped it to Australia resulting with 4 foals in 2008; two colts and two fillies. Cameron Parker has a red roan colt out of his great challenge mare Destinys Fancy Jewel, Kent Hansen has a chestnut filly out of Shadows Cherrybar, and Dan Baker has a colt and a filly. The filly is out of Jeff Eddie’s very good cutting mare Jessies Suzanna and the colt is out of another champion cutting mare Winderadeen Southern Star.
With the Australian NCHA Futurity show being held so late in 2008 due to EI, it was decided to bring Peppy Boontown home to Australia early, to show in the Derby, so Australian breeders could get to see first hand just how good this young stallion was.
Two weeks after getting out of Quarantine he was shown at the Capella Cutting show with Jason Leitch. Peppy Boontown placed 3rd in the Novice in his first outing in Australia. Unfortunately he was injured in a stall and was forced to take the rest of the year off, missing the NCHA Derby. He had a full book of mares that season and bred 67 mares with 59 settling in foal.
After the 2008 breeding season Peppy Boontown was being ridden by Cameron Parker in preparation for the Rocky Rush. He only had about 10 days to get ready after an extended breeding season, which was not going to be enough. Corey Holden had a cutting school which Cameron Parker attended, where Corey had his first ride on Peppy Boontown. Corey liked the horse instantly. Cameron suggested as there was not enough time to prepare for the Rocky Rush, Peppy Boontown should go to Corey Holden as he liked him so much and they seemed to fit. This proved to be a great decision. Corey showed Peppy Boontown to final in the Classic Challenge at Toowoomba to 4th place and again finaling at Goondiwindi. Dan Baker also showed Peppy Boontown at Goondiwindi finaling and coming 5th in the Non Pro Classic Challenge.
2009 has seen the first full foal crop hitting the ground, with some outstanding individuals amongst them (check the Gallery and Sale Pages).
The 2009 breeding season has again shaped up well breeding over 35 mares so far with some great mares in his court; Spinnies Gold Dust, Spinnies Bohemia, Dorothy Dox, Christmas Spin, Docs Beverley, Docs Nikita, Spinning Garter to name a few.
Peppy Boontown will again be shown by Corey Holden in 2010
